Dianthus Scent First® Compact Raspberry Surprise

So floriferous is this exciting new Dianthus that during the height of its bloomtime, you may not be able to see the foliage at all. Masses upon masses of double-flowered 2-inch blooms cover this low-growing plant, giving you plenty for cut flowers and the garden alike. Super-easy to grow and even tolerant of drought conditions, 'Raspberry Surprise' should be your top choice for containers and the sunny garden.

The flowers are merrily fringed, double to semi-double, and 2 inches wide?pretty big by Dianthus standards. And while most Dianthus offer just one bloom per stem, 'Raspberry Surprise' gives you anywhere from 2 to 5?a nosegay on every flowering stem. The blooms are highly fragrant with a spicy-sweet, clove-like scent. Butterflies adore them, and they make fine additions to cut flower arrangements of all kind, from the simple boutonniere to a merry mix of annuals and perennials in a giant vase. Add a few 'Raspberry Surprises,' and the entire bouquet is richly fragrant for days.

'Raspberry Surprise' comes by its fragrance, bloom size, and flower strength honestly. Bred in England by a plantsman named John Whetman, it is part of the Devon Cottage series of floriferous, highly fragrant Dianthus. Expect the flowers to keep coming from spring through late fall. During the hottest months the plant will rest from blooming, but the needle-like, silvery-green foliage stays fresh and attractive year-round. Just 10 inches high (in bloom) and a foot wide, this plant is the perfect size for containers, edging, the front of the border, and accents. Use it wherever you need an injection of fresh, evergreen color.
